Division Descriptions

One of the features of Frontier Baseball is our flexibility in assigning a player to a playing division that best suites his or her needs. Whether your child has been playing baseball for several years or is just starting, we can find a place for them that will match their skill level and experience.

Note: "League Age" is determined by the player's age on May 1st of the calendar year.

T-BALL DIVISON (BATTING TEE, 55’ BASES)

We offer a T-ball Division baseball program for 4-6 year olds to introduce them to the game of baseball. The primary goal of the T-Ball Division is to begin to instruct young players on the fundamentals of baseball in a supportive and FUN team environment. They will be taught hitting techniques utilizing a batting tee, fielding and throwing skills, and the basic rules of the game. A soft baseball is used in this division for player safety.

All eligible players who sign up will be placed on a team. The league will assign players to teams and will attempt to honor all requests to play with friends and schoolmates

ROOKIE DIVISION (MACHINE PITCH, 60’ BASES)

We offer a machine-pitch Rookie Division baseball program for 5 – 7 year olds that will continue the instruction of fundamental, baseball skills. Those 5 and 6 year olds who are selected for Rookie baseball must have played T-Ball before and should be prepared to hit pitches from a pitching machine and field balls that may, at times, be hit considerably harder than in T-Ball. Any 5 and 6 year olds that may not be ready for fielding at this level should return to T-ball one more year. We also allow 7 year olds with limited or no baseball experience to play in the Rookie Division. A soft baseball is used in this division for player safety.

A DIVISION (MACHINE PITCH, 60’ BASES)

We offer a A Division baseball program for 6-7 year olds who are ready to progress from Rookie Baseball and 8 year olds who may not be quite ready for live pitching in AA. This division uses soft, safety baseballs and the speed of the pitches is slightly increased from the Rookie Division. By using a pitching machine, the fear of being hit by a pitched ball is diminished and players gain confidence in hitting the ball. Fewer defensive errors and greater throwing accuracy are the result of the increase in activity.

The A Division is an excellent way to continue teaching the fundamentals of the game and building player confidence. An official umpire and scorekeeping is introduced. All players in this division must participate in player evaluations, which will take place in early January. Following evaluations, players will be drafted onto a team by their team manager.

The season concludes with a double elimination tournament for which every team in the division qualifies, regardless of record. Additional post-season play may be available.

AA DIVISION (46’ PLAYER PITCH, 60’ BASES, NO LEAD-OFFS)

We offer a AA Division baseball program for 7-9 year olds, and a few of the lesser-experienced 10 year olds. The AA Division is the biggest transition for children to make in their young baseball careers. In this division, the players will pitch to the hitters using regulation hard baseballs. Players in the AA Division continue building and refining their fundamental skills while they begin to understand game strategy.

The season concludes with a double elimination tournament for which every team in the division qualifies, regardless of record. The top two finishers from our league tournament move on to the Tournament of Champions to compete with our neighboring Cal Ripken leagues.

AAA DIVISION (46’ PLAYER PITCH, 65’ BASES, LEAD-OFFS, PICK-OFFS)

We offer a AAA Division baseball program for 9-11 year olds. The AAA Division introduces competitive baseball including lead-offs and pick-offs. This level is designed to help our players sharpen their skills so they will be adequately prepared to later compete in our Majors Division. Official baseball rules are instituted with modified lead-offs, stealing, pitching from the stretch, balks and dropped 3rd strikes. Pitching is at 46’ and the base paths are set at 65’. Having fun and continuing to master fundamental skills is still emphasized while we seek to help our players understand and execute more complex game strategy.

It is highly recommended that players at this level have significant baseball experience including at least one year of AA division. Pitching is faster and hard hit baseballs are common.

It is important to note that many 9 year olds will play in the lower AA Division as a result of their baseball experience and results from their player evaluations. Players age 11 are eligible to play in either the AAA Division or the Major division. However, only the highest skilled 11's may get drafted up into Majors. There is no guarantee for anyone to play in Majors except 12 year olds who are not deemed a safety risk at that level.

Official baseball rules are utilized with lead-offs, stealing, pitching from the stretch, balks and dropped 3rd strikes. The pitching is very advanced, with fastballs usually in the 50-60 MPH range and off speed pitches commonplace. Hit baseballs (line drives) can often exceed 100 MPH! A significant time commitment is required by all players in this division to attend practices and prepare for games Players will only be considered for this program if they are fully prepared to participate at this most advanced level of Cal Ripken play.

All 10 and 11 year olds are eligible to play in either the AAA Division or the Major division. However, only the highest skilled players may get drafted up into Majors. There is no guarantee for anyone to play in Majors except 12 year olds who are not deemed a safety risk at that level.
